Types of Employee Drug Testing

There are many types of employee drug testing -Pre-Employment Drug Testing, Random Drug Testing, Post Accident Drug Testing, and Reasonable Suspicion Drug Testing.

Drug testing can help to improve employee morale and productivity while decreasing absenteeism, accidents, downtime, turnover and theft. Because every business and workforce is unique, every employer should make a careful determination about the drug testing program elements that are most beneficial for their workplace.

Pre-Employment Drug Testing:

Many companies test job applicants for illegal drug use as part of the Pre- employment hiring process. Employees may be screened for drugs and or alcohol use, where permitted by state law. Hiring can be contingent upon passing a pre-employment urine or saliva drug test and may also include alcohol tests. Drug testing laws vary by state. In some cases, the law requires drug testing. Rapid onsite urine drug tests and saliva drug tests are not DOT approved.  They must be collected by a certified collector. The specimens are then sent to a certified Lab for testing.

Random Employee Drug Testing:

We recommend random drug testing should be in your drug testing policy. Even if you are not thinking you will be random drug testing now. This will give you the option if you decide to do this as long as you have this in your employee drug testing policy you could start the process at your choosing. If random drug testing is in your policy and this will make employees more aware that you could conduct random drug testing at any time. Having random drug testing in your employee drug testing policy will help to discourage employee drug use in the workplace.

Post-Accident Employee Drug Testing:

Testing employees who were involved in a workplace accident or unsafe practices can help determine whether alcohol or other drug use was a contributing factor to the incident. We offer many options for your post-accident drug testing and also offer Lab confirmation and MRO (medical Review Officer) services for non- negative test results. We can help set up a lab confirmation account for our clients. Contact customer service for more information.

Reasonable Suspicion Employee Drug Testing:

You may decide to test employees who show discernible signs of being unfit for duty (for-case testing), or who have a documented pattern of unsafe work behavior (reasonable suspicion testing.) These kinds of tests help to protect the safety and wellbeing of the employee and other coworkers.
